<p><br />
This is the first of two courses replacing Using Real Colors.&#160; <em>Understanding Real Colors</em> takes the content from the <em>Real Colors workshop</em> and allows participants to more deeply understand temperament styles and preferences.&#160; Most of the course is experiential as participants explore and react to materials, with a well-trained instructor guiding the many processing discussions.&#160; Participants will take the Real Colors Temperament Assessment, engage in a variety of discussions designed to demonstrate temperament preferences, focus on strengths of each temperament style, address what causes stress and anger for the various temperaments, consider work with students and others, learn how to see and name temperament styles of other people, and learn the basic theory behind Real Colors.&#160; This class is a pre-requisite for <em>Applying Real Colors</em> , which focuses on use of Real Colors in the workplace and school.&#160; Contact&#160;<a href="mailto:kbosovich@isea.org">Kathy Bosovich</a> &#160;to inquire about scheduled courses or to schedule a session in your area.</p>

<p>This course examines motivational theory and practical ideas,&#160;as well as providing the opportunity for participants to discuss elements of this seemingly easy, but complicated issue.&#160;Each participant will acquire knowledge and skills that will have a positive impact on student effort and responsibility by:<br />
(1)&#160;understanding how teachers' goals, values, beliefs, and behavior affect students in the classroom;<br />
(2) understanding how to frame teaching to affect students;<br />
(3) acquiring knowledge of research-based theories on motivation;<br />
(4) self-assessing own teaching practices and effect on students;<br />
(5) designing and analyzing lesson(s) which affect students;<br />
(6) using motivational theories, and;<br />
(7) being aware of additional strategies, approaches, and resources which will help to increase the efforts and responsibilities of students in all areas.&#160;<br />
This course received First Place honors at the 2008 National Staff Association for Instructional Improvement&#160;<a href="images/inc-eff-nsaii.doc" target="_blank">(NSAII) Awards</a> .<br />

The course is very interactive.&#160;It is based on a workshop created by the California Teachers Association and distributed nationally by NEA. <p>This&#160;course&#160;is a must for anyone going through the rigorous certification process.&#160; It is designed for teachers pursuing National Board Certification and provides both information and support for candidates.&#160; The class can be taken for graduate credit, license renewal credit or audited on three Saturdays from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm.&#160; The class will be offered in Cedar Rapids at Viola Gibson Elementary, 6101 Gibson Dr NE and will meet December 19th, January 16th and Februry 6th.&#160; &#160;Here are some highlights of the course:</p>

<p>Childhood obesity is addressed by providing a comprehensive understanding of health-related physical fitness using multiple learning strategies that stress the importance of teaching both physical activity and nutrition education within the same curriculum. An overview of national statistics concerning childhood obesity, two key culprits identified as why children are increasing in size, good health as prerequisite to good education, and innovative programs are highlighted. Resources for the program include the Physical Best Program and USDA MyPyramid for kids.</p>

<p>It is an ideal course for:</p>

<div>Teachers/instructors (elementary classroom, physical education, science, and health; preschool, daycare) searching for learning strategies that teach both physical activity and nutrition education.</div>

<div>Local wellness coordinators and panel members searching for programs to met their local wellness policy goals.</div>

<div>Parents searching for fun and exciting strategies they can use right at home that get their children up and moving while learning.</div>
</li>
</ul>

<p>The topics include: national statistics concerning childhood obesity, physical and emotional ramifications, the two key culprits, childhood is the optimal age, cooperate approach; good health is a prerequisite to good education, effective learning strategies, local wellness policy, and innovative programs.</p>
